Nyepi Day in Bali

It’s time to once again celebrate one of the world’s most unique cultural holidays, the Balinese Day Of Silence.

Also known as Nyepi Day, this cultural holiday is unique only to Bali. For 24 wonderful hours, the entire island will be steeped in silence. No one will be allowed outside and all offices and places of business will be closed. The streets will be empty, as well as the waterways and the sky. It’s certainly a sight to behold and a fantastic experience for everyone!

At night, windows and glass doors are covered with black cloth so not even a crack of light can be seen. Do take the opportunity to stargaze - without light pollution, you’ll be able to witness the most brilliant night sky!

For most of us, Nyepi Day is observed for 24 hours, this year from 6am on 22 March until 6am on 23 March. But for the Balinese, preparations have begun at least one week prior with many cleansing ceremonies, prayers and rituals taking place in temples, homes and the beach. 

The most exciting part of Nyepi is the magnificent Ogoh-Ogoh Parade that takes place the night before. Gigantic papier-mâché sculptures depicting demonic spiritual entities from Hindu mythology are carried throughout the streets with much fanfare, and later, burned to ashes.

Omed-Omedan, The “Kissing” Festival

Did you know that we have our own “kissing” festival here in Bali? Known as Omed-Omedan, this fascinating 100-year-old tradition takes place every year the day after Nyepi in the village of Sesetan, in Banjar Kaja, Denpasar. 

Omed-Omedan means “to pull” in the Balinese language. On this day, the young and unmarried girls and boys of the village between the ages of 17 and 30 will come together to celebrate the first day of the Balinese New Year with this fun and exciting tradition. 

The event begins with a mass prayer. Thereafter, the groups, divided into boys and girls, stand facing each other. Once the signal has been given, both groups will start pulling at one another, with the males trying to kiss their chosen females. 

Throughout the event, buckets of water are poured over the youngsters to add to the fun and excitement of it all. The festivities last for approximately 2 hours until every participant has been kissed.
