The 41st Bali Art Festival

Pesta kesenian Bali or Bali Art Festival is an annual agenda from the Government of Bali which is aimed to exhibit, develop and preserve the valuable Balinese works of art and culture. The first Bali Art Festival was held in 1979, with different themes each year, which is inspired from the Balinese philosophy. Now in it is 41st year, the "Bayu Pramana" is the chosen theme that can be interpreted as "the breath of life".

Around a hundred and fifty thousand artists will take a part in the festival which will be held from June 15th to July 13th, 2019. The event will take place at "Taman Budaya" or "Art Center Bali" which is located on Jalan Nusa Indah, Denpasar Bali.

Representatives from every region in Bali is required to take a part in the annual event, they will perform in the opening ceremony and in the shows that follow. There will be art performances such as dances, theatrical or drama, traditional music and art competitions. There will be also food courts that serve traditional foods and shopping arcades that sell handy crafts, clothes, jewelries. It's Bali's biggest Art Festival you shouldn’t miss. So if you are planning to visit Bali during the festival dates, make sure you add it in your must-do list.

Tenganan Village is located in Karangasem regency, about an hour and half drive from Sanur. This historical village is well known for its beautiful traditional weaving, handicrafts, friendly villagers and its unique tradition: Mekare – Kare.

Mekare-Kare or Perang Pandan is an ancient tradition practiced only in this old Balinese village. The festival is dedicated to honor “Dewa Indra” the god of war and the sky in Hindu beliefs. The ritual is marked with friendly duel between all male villagers, who fight each other armed with a small rattan shield in one hand and a tied packet of thorny ‘pandan’ leaves in the other. The “war” then will be closed with “megibung”, a tradition where villagers gather and enjoying meals together.

This festival will be held on the 7th and 8th June, 2019. So mark your calendar and witness this one of a kind tradition.
