Happy Smiling Faces Of Children From Solemen Bali Foundation

Yayasan Solemen Indonesia (‘Solemen’), an Indonesian non - profit foundation, provides direct support and funding for the disadvantaged and ‘diffabled’ (differently abled) in Bali. Established in October 2010, Solemen is one of Bali’s most trusted and visible charities. The Governor of Bali is Solemen’s ‘Pelindung’ (Guardian/Patron) and the charity is endorsed by the Bali Government Tourism Office and the Bali Hotels Association.

We’ve been supporting Solemen by selling teddy bears at our reception, the sale of the teddy bears is fully donated to the foundation. On the November 16, 2018, we invited children from Solemen to spend a day the camp splash & kids club and to enjoy lunch. There were about 40 people from the foundation who came over to the Suites. Our Suites Manager, Bapak Ratep welcomed the children and together with our staffs accompanied them to have a fun day! It is such a pleasure to see their happy smiling faces. You too can support them by purchasing Solemen teddy bears that are available at our reception desk. Your contribution means a lot to them.

Cultural Event: Galungan Day

Galungan is a Balinese Hindu holiday, which celebrates the victory of Dharma (good) over adharma (evil). This time round, Galungan day falls on December 26, 2018. As Galungan falls every 210 days, there are roughly 2 Galungan celebrations every calendar year. Throughout the day, temples are crowded with people coming and going, bringing intricate offerings and praying. Balinese Hindus believe that during the Galungan period, the sacred ancestors of the family descend to their former homes. The current habitants have the responsibility to be hospitable to these spirits through prayers and offerings. Families who have ancestors that have not yet been cremated, but are still buried in the village cemetery, must present the offerings at the graves of the deceased.

Although Galungan falls on a Wednesday, the celebration begins the day before, on a day that is called "Penampahan Galungan". On Penampahan Galungan day, people are busy preparing offerings and cooking for the next day, whilst the women of the household have been busy for days already, creating beautifully woven "Banten" (offerings made from young coconut leaves). Outside all houses, you can find "Penjor", a long decorated bamboo pole installed by the side of the entrance to the family home.

The day after Galungan is "Manis Galungan", a day for everyone to visit their relatives and friends. If you happen to be in Bali during Galungan, do not miss the opportunity to witness and capture this unique festival.

Catching Waterfalls

Bali has always been associated to breath taking sunsets, beautiful beaches and rice fields (yah yah, we know that, we've been there). Did you know that Bali is hiding some of gorgeous waterfalls that are still unknown to most tourists? For those who have visited Bali for many times (and for newbies as well), here's a list of beautiful waterfalls you shouldn't miss when you are here.

1. Nungnung Waterfall.

Nung Nung waterfall is located in Nung Nung village, Badung regency (it's about an hour drive from Bali's capital city, Denpasar). Descend into a deep, cool gorge down you will be rewarded with an amazing sight. Nungnung is 70 meters high, and the amount of water thundering down into the plunge pool is truly impressive. Nature and photography lovers will be blown away by this magical place and it makes a wonderful day out for families and friends. The path down to the falls has recently been renovated and new handrails have been added, but it's still a steep and slippery hike down for little ones, but if you're used to exploring off the beaten track with your kids and feel up to the challenge, put the baby in a backpack carrier and make sure to wear sturdy shoes!

 2. Aling Aling Waterfall.

Aling Aling waterfalls is located in Buleleng regency (around 80 km from Denpasar). This waterfall is also known as the twin waterfalls because it is split at the peak into two adjacent with different stream speeds. This 35-meter waterfall is surrounded by cliffs with lush vegetation.

3.Tegenungan Waterfall.

Tegenungan waterfall is located at the Petanu River in Ubud, which is around an hour drive from Denpasar. The waterfall is only 15 meters high, so you can actually jump right into the waterfall, which is great fun. This waterfall is also surrounded by lush green trees, perfect for swimming and to escape the city rush.

4. Sekumpul Waterfall.

This is for those who like a bit of a challenge! This waterfall is located in Buleleng regency (around 80 km from Denpasar). Getting to the waterfall is quite a challenge, as you need to travel down slippery steps and across a river to see the falls close-up. You can ask people to take you to the waterfall for a small price, and they will take you until the end of the road, from where you can walk around 50m to find out the most beautiful views from high ground. What's interesting about Sekumpul Waterfall is that instead of one waterfall, there are seven ("sekumpul" means "group" in Indonesian). These are all scattered around the area, with the tallest being more than 50 meters high.

5. Blahmantung Waterfall.

Blahmantung Waterfall is located in Tabanan regency (around an hour and half drive from Denpasar). Set near the picturesque coffee farming village, Pupuan, the waterfall has a spectacular drop of over 100 meters. The pool of Blahmantung waterfall is surrounded by lush green scenery and bathing there is simply great. The 800 meters walk from the parking lot to Blahmantung waterfall is partially challenging and especially during raining season you should be aware of slippery rocks.
