Nyepi Day in Bali

Every year, the Hindu community celebrates New Years with a difference, for the Balinese this is called the “Caka Year”, unlike most people who celebrate New Year in revelry, the Balinese celebrate their New Year in silence, it’s called "Nyepi" day, Nyepi is derived from the word 'sepi" means silence. This year, Nyepi day falls on March 17, 2018.

Nyepi is a day to make and keep the balance of nature, from the religious and philosophy point of view, Nyepi is meant to be a day of self-introspection and the Balinese Hindu community also celebrates Nyepi by fasting and meditating. Nyepi starts from 6 am until 6 am the next morning, the day is reserved self-reflection, anything that might interfere with that purposes is restricted. The main restrictions are: "Amati Geni" (no fire or light), "Amati Karya" (no working), "Amati lelunganan" (no traveling) and "Amati lelanguan" (fasting and no revelry/entertainment). During Nyepi day, there's no activity in the island, Bali's streets and roads are empty, there's no noise from TVs and radios and everybody stays inside their homes. The only people to be seen outdoors are the "Pecalang", the traditional security men who patrol the streets to ensure no one is on the roads. The only exceptions granted are for emergency vehicles carrying those with life-threatening conditions and women about to give birth.

Just like other Balinese Hindu's holidays, there are pre and post days. The day before Nyepi is called "Pengrupukan". On this day, "Bhuta Yajnya" ritual is held in order to vanquish the negative elements. Ogoh-ogoh (statues made of bamboo and paper symbolizing negative elements) is paraded around the village, after the parade, the "Pengrupukan" ritual takes place that involves burning the ogoh-ogoh. The day after Nyepi is called "Ngembak Geni", it is performed for all Balinese to forgive each other and welcome the new days to come and the usual life of the Balinese starts again.

Generally Nyepi day will not effect the internal operations of Prime Plaza Suites – Sanur Bali, however we totally respect the Balinese community and ask all visitors to respect this tradition.

Happy Smiling Children From The Bina Ekklesia Orphanage

We invited the children from Bina Ekklesia orphanage to spend a day at Camp Splash. The Ekklesia orphanage is located in Denpasar, about 15 minutes from Prime Plaza Hotel & Suites Sanur and is home to over 30 children ranging from 6 – 19 years of age. These children all live under the one roof and we have been supporting this orphanage with the children’s education needs such as books, bags, and other school equipment. We decided to invite them to the Camp Splash for some lunch and spend a day on the waterslide!

Coming from West Sumba, an island to the east of Bali, the children are from poverty stricken families who struggle for survival on a daily basis.  This situation often leads to child abandonment, abuse and neglect, and forces many children onto the streets.

Ekklesia was established in an effort to improve the plight of these children. The orphanage provides quality nutrition, a clean and safe place to live and equips the children with proper education. Their aim is to raise a better generation, who are prepared to be significant contributors to their society and prevent them turning to the streets.

It was such a pleasure to watch the kids having fun and the smiles said it all. There are many orphanages in Bali that do a wonderful job caring for the children of the poor and at risk.  Prime Plaza Hotel & Suites Sanur  in conjunction with our guests support these children. Many of our guests bring second hand items, including clothing, books, and toys to Bali to be distributed to orphans and people in need in Bali.  Other guests kindly fill their luggage with new items.  Of special need are clothes, shoes, toys, and educational equipment like books, pens and pencils.

If you have anything that you would like to donate, Prime Plaza Hotel and Suites Sanur - Bali is happy to ensure that it gets to the orphanage.

1. “Fantastic Family Resort” by Joelle H

We had a great week here with all 7 of us enjoying our stay.
The kids could not get enough of the kids pool and camp Splash. The ladies who ran the activities were so friendly and happy to help the kids, remembering them by name after our first day! Always checking to see if they wanted to join in with the activities.  The resort was always clean and tidy as were the rooms.

2. Always welcoming – home away from home by Debbie P

We stayed at the suites for our sixth time over Christmas. It was so lovely to see Debbie’s face light up at Reception when she saw us and she is so welcoming. Our 3BRM suite was a welcome relief of space after 2 x hotel rooms in Legian and the five of us could all retreat to our own space when needed.
