02 June 2025

From June 21 to 23, journey to the ancient village of Tenganan Pegringsingan in Karangasem for the Mekare-Kare ritual, a dramatic and sacred highlight of the Tenganan Culture Festival. Also known as the Pandanus War, this centuries-old tradition sees young men engage in symbolic duels using thorny pandan leaves and rattan shields to honor Dewa Indra, the Hindu god of war.
Beyond the adrenaline-filled battles, the festival offers a rare window into Bali Aga culture, including traditional dances, music, sacred rituals, textile weaving demonstrations, and local cuisine that reflect the island’s ancient roots.
Why you’ll love it:
- Cultural immersion in one of Bali’s oldest and most preserved villages
- Authentic performances not found in mainstream tourist spots
- A scenic day trip surrounded by lush hills and traditional charm
Plan Your Visit: Located in Tenganan Village, approx. 3 km north of Candidasa in East Bali. Arrive early to secure a good spot, the festival draws large crowds of locals and cultural enthusiasts alike.
