On 23 November 2026, the Goa Lawah Festival takes place in Klungkung, bringing one of East Bali's most unusual and atmospheric temples into the spotlight.

Goa Lawah, known as the Bat Cave Temple, is one of Bali's nine sacred temples, built around the mouth of a cave where thousands of bats cling to the walls and ceiling. Founded in the 11th century by the revered priest Mpu Kuturan, it stands beside a black sand beach, and the outline of Nusa Penida can be seen on the horizon.

During major temple celebrations, Goa Lawah becomes a vibrant centre of devotion, with colourful offerings, traditional gamelan music and ceremonial processions. Pilgrims in bright traditional attire carry colourful parasols and banners, creating a living cultural lesson that children often find far more captivating than anything in a textbook. The sight of the cave, the sound of the gamelan and the fragrance of incense and flowers make it a feast for every sense.

Temples in Bali are places of worship, so a little preparation goes a long way. Visitors are welcome to enter wearing light traditional dress, a cloth and a sash, so wear or bring a sarong and sash, and encourage children to observe quietly and save their questions for afterwards. Ceremonies always take priority, so follow any guidance from temple staff and keep a respectful distance from worshippers.

Klungkung is around 45 minutes to an hour by car from Sanur, so an early start helps you beat both the crowds and the afternoon showers. Consider combining your visit with a stop in Semarapura, Klungkung's historic town, for a relaxed East Bali day out. Rain is part of November, but it rarely lasts all day, and a few indoor plans keep the family happy until the clouds clear. A good rainy day starts with a simple choice: head out for a change of scene, or stay in and enjoy the suite.

For a change of scene, spend the day at ICON Bali Mall, just minutes from the resort. Wander through the mall together, stop for a long lunch, let the children enjoy the play zone, catch a film or do some quick shopping. A short trip to Grand Lucky supermarket is also handy for stocking your suite kitchen with snacks, breakfast items and everything else you need for your stay.

Back at the resort, our Kids Club is currently in the Garden Wing Lobby while improvement works continue until 15 December 2026. It is an indoor space where young guests can enjoy selected activities, meet new friends and join games with our friendly team, which makes it a handy option for a rainy afternoon. Ask the team about the day's schedule when you arrive. When the clouds clear, the Camp Splash waterslide and swimming pool remain open as usual.

Prefer to stay in? Your suite has a full kitchen and a spacious living area, ideal for baking together, a family movie afternoon or a board game tournament. You can also turn the afternoon into a mini pamper session, with face masks, hand massages, hair braiding and nail painting for parents and children alike, a relaxed way to enjoy the rain together.

A few simple habits make rainy days easier: pack light ponchos and a spare change of clothes, keep outdoor plans for the morning and indoor plans for the afternoon, and let the children set the pace.

Few games are as simple, or as joyful, as tug of war. Two teams, one rope and a whole lot of cheering: it is a classic, and a favourite among young guests in our daily kids' activity programme.

The game begins one by one. Each child is invited to try a 1 vs 1 round, pulling against a friend of similar age and size while the others cheer, so everyone gets a feel for the rope before the team rounds begin. Then the children are divided into two teams, line up along the rope and, on the signal, pull together to bring the centre marker over their side. Our friendly team supervises every round, keeps teams balanced by age and size, and makes sure everyone gets a turn, so the focus stays on fun rather than winning.

Behind the laughter, there is plenty of good learning going on. Tug of war teaches children to listen, communicate and work as a team, because the rope only moves when everyone pulls together. It builds confidence, encourages healthy competition and offers a gentle lesson in winning and losing gracefully, all while burning off a generous amount of energy before dinner.

It is also a wonderful way to make friends. Children from different countries and backgrounds quickly find common ground when they are cheering on the same team, and the rope needs no shared language. Parents are welcome to cheer from the sidelines, and the smiles at the end of each round, win or lose, say it all.

When everyone is ready for a change of pace, take a walk through Sanur and enjoy the atmosphere on Christmas Day. The beachfront path is lovely for a stroll or a family bike ride, and you can pause at a café for something cool along the way.

At midday, join the Christmas Day Buffet Lunch at our sister property, Prime Plaza Hotel Sanur, on Friday, 25 December 2026, from 12.00 noon to 2.30 pm in the Griya Agung Ballroom.
