Nyepi Day in Bali

Nyepi Day in Bali

It’s almost time for Nyepi! The world-famous Balinese Day of Silence will bring the entire island to a standstill - for 24 wonderful hours, Bali will be devoid of sound, light and movement, as locals and visitors alike remain indoors to welcome in the brand new Saka Bali New Year with quiet contemplation and self-reflection.

Unique only to Bali, the traditions surrounding Nyepi can be traced back at least two thousand years. Leading up to the 24 hours of silence is a week of religious rituals comprising prayers and ceremonies with the intention of cleansing homes, temples, streets, businesses, neighbourhoods and religious relics of negative energies.

The most exciting part of Nyepi is the magnificent Ogoh-Ogoh Parade that takes place the night before. Gigantic papier-mâché sculptures depicting demonic spiritual entities from Hindu mythology are carried throughout the streets with much fanfare, and later, burned to ashes. Everyone is welcome to witness the parade, so be sure you won’t miss out - it’s a sight to behold!

This year’s Nyepi Day falls on March 11th from 6:00 am until 6:00 am on March 12th. Stay with us at Prime Plaza Suites Sanur for Nyepi - there’ll be lots of activities and entertainment in-house, and the opportunity to stargaze on the most brilliant and clearest night of the year!
