Visit Pura Besakih, The Mother Temple of Bali.

Pura Besakih is often referred to as the “Mother Temple” by the Balinese. It is a thousand years old with spectacular architecture dating back to the 10th century. A visit to Pura Besakih will take you approximately 1000 metres above sea level, halfway up Gunung Agung, Bali’s holiest and most sacred mountain, which is located in the Karangasem Regency in East Bali.

A complex of over 80 different temples and shrines built on six levels, the entrance to Pura Besakih is an expansive courtyard and garden area dotted with ancient statues and a large pathway that will lead you towards a set of ancient and majestic steps. These steps are flanked by gorgeous Balinese gateways and lead all the way up to the second courtyard and the main area for prayers and ceremonies.

The entire complex is filled with grassy courtyards, winding pathways, brick gates, stone statues, shrines and even private family temples. Please remember to follow your guide as there are areas that are restricted for devotees only.

The road to Gunung Agung will take you through beautiful and pristine areas of Bali. Along the way, you can stop at cafes, warungs and restaurants for refreshments. Within the temple complex, there are plenty of opportunities to purchase handcrafted souvenirs and gifts.

While there, you can view Gunung Agung “up close” from a safe distance. This is an experience in itself, a breathtaking moment for a beautiful and picturesque scene surrounded by lush greenery and peaceful village life.
