Cultural Event: Galungan Day

Galungan is one of the most important Balinese religious holidays. It’s a celebration of good versus evil and also the time when the ancestral spirits come to earth to rest in the family temples.

Preparations for Galungan can take an entire week, with a series of ceremonies being carried out almost every day until the peak - which this year, falls on the 8th of June. You’ll know that Galungan is near when you see rows and rows of Penjorslining the streets - tall bamboo poles with offerings suspended at the end.

If you’re in Bali during this time, you’re in luck because you can witness the Balinese performing a myriad of offerings, prayers and cleansing rituals at home, in temples and on the beaches around the island.

One of the most popular ones would be the Melasti ceremony, where an entire village wearing white would make their way to the sea or a river, carrying flags, holy relics, statues and deities to the sea. Huge ceremonies will also take place on the beach during this time, sometimes with traditional Balinese dances involved.

On Galungan day, the Balinese will don traditional Balinese outfits and head to their family and village temples to pray. Afterward, it’s time for good food and quality time with the family. . So take this opportunity to witness one of the amazing Bali’s traditional ceremonies and a special offer is always available at Prime Plaza Suites Sanur!
